Our clients loved their contemporary home but felt the two courtyard gardens didn't reflect the calm, welcoming atmosphere they wanted to experience every day. The spaces lacked privacy, felt dominated by hard landscaping and offered little opportunity to enjoy planting, wildlife or quiet moments outdoors. Most importantly, the views from inside the house didn't do justice to the beautiful architecture or the potential of the gardens beyond.
Our design focused on softening the strong architectural lines with naturalistic, layered planting that creates interest throughout the seasons while remaining elegant and easy to maintain. By introducing ornamental grasses, sculptural evergreen planting and carefully chosen flowering plants, we created gardens that feel lush, immersive and full of movement without becoming overcrowded.
Privacy was enhanced through a combination of living screening and carefully positioned planting, helping to create secluded spaces while also discouraging cats from using the boundary walls as a thoroughfare. Thoughtfully designed seating areas, coordinated planters, subtle lighting and practical access routes transformed each courtyard into a comfortable outdoor room that can be enjoyed from morning coffee to evening relaxation.
The result is a pair of peaceful courtyard gardens that not only provide beautiful places to sit but also frame every view from inside the house, bringing nature closer to the home and creating year-round enjoyment for both the clients and local wildlife.
